Philippe Excoffier, Paris

An unexpected surprise in Trocadero, the heart of the 16th arrondissement.

We were lucky enough to be able to stay in one of Paris’s upscale residential neighbourhoods just minutes away from the heart of the city. This affluent quarter was such a delight to stay in during our time there as it was peaceful yet buzzing with energy from the residents. The streets are lined with cafes and bakeries so there’s no need to worry about going hungry.

And let’s not forget the close proximity to the Eiffel Tower!

We’re all familiar with Airbnb but during our search for accommodation, we came across Sweet Inn apartments which is a similar concept however, you’re not sleeping in a stranger’s bed. I definitely stand by their description of themselves being a perfect blend between hotel and home. They have exceptional customer service which is available 24/7- for crucial times where you might accidentally lock yourself out of your apartment! (true story), essential amenities and additional services such as airport transfers, housekeeping and a local smartphone to be ready upon arrival. The Sweet Inn operates in several European cities and I would definitely recommend to stay with them!

So one evening we stumbled across this little unassuming restaurant literally a stone’s throw from our front door. Intrigued by the multiple photos of the head chef with important diplomats plastered across the front window, we did a bit of digging online to find out more. It turns out that Philippe was the executive chef at the American Embassy in Paris and was on Iron Chef in 2009. Excited by this, we immediately booked ourselves a table and managed to bag an early dinner a couple of days later.

I believe Philippe Excoffier is known for his soufflés and wow this cheese soufflé was beautifully decadent to say the least. Unfortunately, as delicious as it was, I could not finish it all by myself so I’d suggest sharing this one.

We had another starter which I can’t for the life of me remember the name of but I do recall it containing crab meat, topped with a smooth salmon mousse.

One of our mains was perfectly cooked duck with sautéed pear and mash potato.

This beautifully smoked salmon dish was to die for! I wish I had taken a photo of the salmon before they placed it on this plate. The waiter brought out the salmon on a bed of smoked wood chips, and the smell.. oh the smell..

I had the braised beef cheek with mash potato as I felt like having something heavily meaty. The beef melts in your mouth and the creamy mash balances the heavy jus, however it would have been nice to have another texture on the dish.. something crunchy perhaps?

It was great to be able to see the chefs work in action as we were placed just by the kitchen and were able to watch them during the whole duration of our meal.

Dessert time! Once again I can’t bring myself to remember what was on the bottom of the Raspberry mousse. Yummy nonetheless!

I had this chocolate bar which was super indulgent with a tangy berry coulis to cut the richness.

Certainly a hidden gem in our books! Great food with even better company always does the trick.

After stuffing our faces, we thought it was best to take an evening stroll to the Eiffel Tower and what a romantic end to the day it was!
