Become a Morning Person

If you’re not an early bird, the struggle is real to get up in the morning. Especially if you haven’t slept a wink the night before!

First thing’s first, let’s start by waking up in the right mindset. Have at least one thing to look forward to everyday. Aim to be productive- no hitting that snooze button! What’s the point in it anyway?

It’s like saying..

“I hate getting up in the morning so I do it over and over and over again”

-Demetri Martin

Here’s a “to-do list” that you can slip into your morning routine in order to get you going in the early hours of the day.

# LEAVE YOUR CURTAINS OPEN
Light stimulates us to wake up and lifts our spirits. Take in that natural sunlight! Make blackout shades a weekend treat.

# ACTIVATE YOUR INNARDS
Drink a glass of water. Your body is dehydrated. Think about it, you’ve gone about 6-8 hours without water overnight. Water helps flush out toxins, fuels your brain and fires up your metabolism.

# MAKE YOUR BED
This one works wonders for me! Making my bed straight away stops me from crawling back under those warm pillowy sheets. I’m quite a perfectionist, so once my bed’s perfectly made up, no one including myself is allowed to sit, touch or lay on it.

# FRESHEN UP
Wash your face. Brush your teeth. Have a cold shower.

# START THE DAY WITH SOMETHING YOU LOVE
Set aside a few minutes to yourself. Read your favourite book, listen to music, meditate, do yoga, drink your favourite coffee or tea.

# MOVE
Stretch. Exercise. DANCE! Movement stimulates blood-flow making you feel more awake and energised. Plus you’ll feel great!

# SMELL SOMETHING CITRUS/ PEPPERMINT
Citrus scents boost your body’s production of serotonin, a hormone that makes you feel happy! Peppermint scents boost energy as well as increases mental stimulation. If you’re not into aromatherapy, you can incorporate these smells in your shower gels, lotions or your breakfast. Eat a grapefruit, drink orange juice or squeeze some lemon into your smoothie.

# KNOCKER UPPERS
If all of the above doesn’t work, not all is lost! This one’s for those who need physical assistance. Believe it or not, a Knocker-Upper was a profession back in the day during the Industrial Revolution in Britain. Their job consisted of using a long stick to knock on doors and windows to wake people to get to work on time.

By all means, get a roommate, your mother, brother, kids, pets to all tickle, jump, push, lick you out of bed!

With these tricks aside, aim to get enough quality sleep.

Get in sync with your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle; your circadian rhythm. You’ll be one step closer to feeling more energised and raring to go.
